The scale of a chart refers to a measurement of distance. A chart covering a relatively large area is called a Small Scale chart and one covering a relatively small area is called a Large Scale chart. Scale may vary from 1:1,200 for harbor plans to 1:20,000,000 for world charts. Most nautical charts contain a reference to a natural scale, expressed as a ratio; e.g. 1:25,000 indicating that one unit of the chart represents 25,000 units of the earths surface. Another way of expressing scale, called numerical scale, is in inches equivelant to the nautical mile. To calculate an inch to a nautical mile, divide the scale into 72,913,24 |
